WHY THE UCO VALLEY
"MENDOZA"

In the process of looking for a unique
area to produce unique wines, with
character, personality and history; we
found a magnificent terroir within the
Altamira region, and we became
hostage to the beauty and flavors we
found there.
When we discovered our old little
vineyard, the idea of producing a
Malbec that was a perfect expression of
it, became our noble purpose. See,
Altamira has a unique combination of
elements that fosters the perfect terroir
for producing Malbec wine. So the
search began, and we as adventurers
started producing a Malbec that would
reflect the authenticity of our place. The
aim was to create a wine that would
tend towards silky tannins, seductive
notes of flowers and graphite and a
long, linear and fresh finish, and so our
Terroir Expressions Hostage Altamira
Malbec was born.

A world reference in the wine industry, he developed his professional career in
Pomerol, France and Mendoza, Argentina, consolidating himself as a great
interpreter of the terroir. Guided by his wise mentor, Michel Rolland, Marcelo made
his way by producing world-renowned wines. He has led the vintages in Bordeaux for
Chateau La Violette, Chateau Le Gay and Chateau Montviel, living in France between
September and November each year since 2001. His experience in these two distinct
terroirs has helped him gain international fame for these exceptional wines. Marcelo
consistently receives high marks for his wines in France and Argentina and is the first
Latin American winemaker to earn 100 Robert Parker points, with a French wine. A
true lover of music, Marcelo plays the guitar when he is not at work during the
harvest season.

The Heritage of this single vineyard
preserves the original French genetics
of Malbec brought in the year 1853. A
few years later phylloxera destroyed
nearly every single Malbec vineyard in
Europe. Moreover, most vineyards have
modified the genetic of the vines so
they become stronger and produce
more wine. Making Argentina and
especially Mendoza, the only place in
the world where you can find Malbec
vines with the original French DNA.
The story of 1853 Old Vine Estate begins
in the dreams of freedom of an Italian
immigrant family, who moved into the
Uco Valley of Mendoza, Argentina;
without knowing that 100+ years later
their humble vineyard would be
producing some of the most exclusive,
unique, and flavorful wines in the
world.
